Stem cell grown burger to be sold in London

In a few days from now, what is probably the most expensive beefburger (5oz) in history will be cooked and served at London, before an invited audience.

What is so special about it ? Probably the fact that it is made entirely from synthetic meat, grown in the lab using stem cells harvested from a slaughtered cow.

While the average beefburger costs around 2-3 $, this one has an estimated cost of more than 250,000 $ !

The stem cell-grown beefburger is the result of years of work by Mark Post, a medical physiologist at Maastricht University in the Netherlands. His research into synthetic meat has been funded by a wealthy anonymous individual that a source claims will reveal his identify publicly by volunteering to be the first to taste the stem cell burger.

"Eventually, my vision is that you have a limited herd of donor animals which you keep in stock in the world. You basically kill animals and take all the stem cells from them, so you would still need animals for this technology," said Professor Post last year about his research.
